WATCH: Trey Gowdy: No, We Don’t Need a Special Panel on Russia

Trey Gowdy, a leading republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said there is no need for a special panel to look in to Russian meddling in to the 2016 election because the FBI is already investigating.

Rep. Gowdy spoke to Face the Nation on Sunday, saying the FBI was the best law enforcement agency in the world and was more than equipped to handle the investigation.

When asked if an independent probe would be necessary to assess Russian involvement in the 2016 election, Gowdy responded, “Thank goodness we have one. It is called the FBI. The FBI has counterintelligence jurisdiction and they have criminal jurisdiction.”

“They are the world’s premier law enforcement agency. They are independent. You have women and men at the Department of Justice who have dedicated their careers to the blind pursuit of justice. It doesn’t get any more independent than that,” he added.

Gowdy then defended House Intel Chairman Devin Nunes’ decision to travel to the White House to personally brief the President on the ‘incidental’ surveillance of the Trump campaign.

“If the commander in chief cannot be briefed by the chairperson of the House intel committee on a matter that has nothing to do with the FBI investigation then I don’t know what they can talk about,” said Gowdy.
