Food stamp enrollment is plummeting. The massive welfare state created by the Democrats is finally weakening. More than 500,000 people dropped out of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at the start of this year.
President Trump’s time at the White House has been effective. Unemployment has been dropping since he took office fewer people are depending on government benefits.
Conservatives have made it a mission to kick loafers off of welfare. Able-bodied, healthy adults shouldn’t be able to live off of the state. Republicans recently introduced a bill that would tie SNAP benefits to employment.
The government obviously has a vested interest in getting people to rejoin the workforce. The Obama administration allowed welfare costs to spiral out of control because Democrats were willing to ignore the ballooning deficit.
Republicans are not.
“Since its inception, the welfare system has grown into a large bureaucracy that might be susceptible to measuring success by how many people are enrolled in a program rather than by how many have moved from poverty into financial independence,” reads an executive order released by the White House.
The administration is working to change the rules surrounding government welfare. The goal is to reduce enrollment. Creating a generation of dependent people benefits no one. The Republican bill would double the number of welfare recipients subject to work requirements.
“Benefits are critically important and serve a vital role in the safety net aimed at catching people if they should fall into poverty,” House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway wrote last week.
“But equally important is a focus on helping these same people climb back out of poverty.”
People who fall on hard times will be able to get on their feet faster if they get a job. Government benefits are useful but they shouldn’t be viewed as a sole means of support except under special circumstances.
