Ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson didn’t thank President when he left office.
He thanked his staff, the American people, the nation’s diplomats. He thanked everyone who people thought that he would have except President Trump. The reason Tillerson was fired and the reason he didn’t thank the president are one and the same. The relationship between the two has disintegrated.
In fact, the only time Tillerson mentioned Trump in his exit speech was to dig at him. He admitted that he didn’t hear from Air Force One until a little after noontime- a few hours after his dismissal was announced on Twitter.
His tenure won’t officially end until March 31.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!” Trump tweeted early Tuesday morning.
Tillerson’s career has been circling the drain for months. He made himself a target by publicly disagreeing with the president, his boss. Last year rumors flew that Tillerson had branded Trump as an idiot during a particularly expensive meeting.
“President Trump asked me for my opinion of about the job Rex was doing,” reads a months-old email by a GOP campaigner.
“I responded that Rex was performing poorly and should be fired at a politically convenient time. The president asked me why; to which I responded that Rex was frequently working at cross purposes and not following the president’ policies. President Trump nodded at my comment with regard to Rex.”
The Trump White House has faced a lot of chaos.Tillerson’s removal is the most senior shake-up since the President was inaugurated.
“What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition during a time that the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges,” Tillerson said during Tuesday’s press conference.
